However, despite it being the internship I want, people would often scorn and mock my choice of company. This is because I am interning at a company that sells people hopes and dreams for money. Their customers involve uncle and aunties who buy 7 numbers in hopes of striking it big and retiring in peace. Obviously, it's not going to happen that easily or the said company would go bankrupt. This has put the company in a bad light in front of most netizens and I was subjected verbal diarrhea from both my "friends" and family.
I label "friends" because they are not exactly my friends but groupmates in a certain project. It is quite intriguing that they do not consider Operations Management as a business career and give me sarcastic remarks when I tell them I scored an internship at the said company. It really blew my mind because in their opinion, it was not a good company to intern in because there was, and I quote the person, "No future prospect" in that industry. Oh really? You are going to tell me that the company that has the whole of Singapore as their customer base has no future prospects? How about you go

It pisses me off because first, they don't bother to understand the company, and secondly, they just think that Finance is the only viable career out of a business degree. Please, if everyone is going to pursue a career in Finance, who is going to be handling your logistics, your employee relations, your public relations and even more your stakeholder relations? You, the guy doing finance, or people doing Human Resource and Corporate Communications? Sometimes, I am awe that people can be so narrow-minded and immature in believing that there is only one way to strike it big with a business degree. I guess GPA doesn't really take into account EQ much does it.
But as time passes, I realise I do not need to explain my point of view to these people. Their microscopic view of the world is not something I would understand. It is about how you see the world
As can be seen, even though it's part of the same image, one side could be seen as romance blooming while the other could be said to be end of the world incoming. To other people, my pursuance in this field could be considered career suicide while I understand that this is the start of something good. *cue Daughtry song*
After some time in SMU, I realised that you need to believe in yourself and push on.
Along the way, there would be obstacles, there would be people throwing shit at you.
This is all part of character building, this is what would mold you.
I know I am not perfect and full of flaws.
But at least, I do not condone anybody's career.
Because if you throw shit at everyone, one day shit is going to be thrown back at you.
Thank you so much for the opportunity for this internship.
