It has finally hit me that I am really getting older
It was when people started telling me to attend career talks, my email is full of companies looking at hiring "management associate" that I really realise shit is getting real. I am no longer year 2 whereby I can while my time away and doing any shit I like in my past time. I really do need to figure out what I want to do in life. Most of my friends know that I often talk about wanting to be a teacher, but I am not closed off towards a career in Esports, be it betting or operations inside.
Yes, I will talk about teaching first and my approach regarding that aspect is that I really enjoy teaching. They say teaching is a calling and I totally agree with that statement. During my teens I have often taught tuition and my kids have fared generally well. But most of you know the outcome as I get too intense in my teaching as I push them to be the very best (Yes, Pokemon reference). Also I learnt something very important as summarised by the picture below.
Teachers are generally kind people and I aspire to be one of them. Though I talk shit and is mean to some of my closer friends, you know that you can always count on me when you have troubles or for me to bail you out. People have different aspirations in life. Some people want to have money, some people want to get famous. I just want to be someone that will leave an impact in people's life be it in the short term or 10 years down the road. As long as you cross path with me I want to touch you with kindness.
Yes, I understand there are many ways to be kind to others, donating money to charity, giving time to doing CIP. But what can be more kind that helping someone find the joy in education and being able to leave a bigger impact on society than your two bare hands. Thus, I would looking at a MOE internship should I not be able to secure any relevant internship in Esports this summer.
This brings me to the next point regarding Esports as a career, or is it just a hobby. I started taking this seriously when I realise the scene is getting enormous. A bigger fan base means more companies entering this scene which leads to more job creation. And I want to be part of this wave as we forge a totally new industry. I even did an independent report regarding esports betting for my internship in the past summer. Sadly, the scene is pretty bad in Singapore even though the scene in the rest of the world is expanding exponentially. This is because Singapore really hate changes. They do not take kindly of "computer games" and stuff as a career because it's for kids. This social stigma regarding Esports cannot be helped with more bans regarding online betting which severely impacts the growth of the scene as Esports and Esports betting goes hand-in-hand. Despite Valve's crazy banwave on many sites, betting generally would improve the scene as long as it is contained. I guess there are tons of teenagers that engage in micro betting in their skins and items but come on, so what if they part with 5 or 10 bucks per year. Esports is here to stay and gambling would always be a part of it.
Rambling aside, the key target would be to secure an internship in an Esports company this summer, I know it is just semester 1 but the early bird catches the worm don't they all say. So I am looking at attending more esports convention in Singapore so I can talk to more people there and make some connections to understand the esports scene better. I am still open towards going overseas for internship as the Esports scene is much bigger in Europe and China. I just hope that one day the scene in Singapore would expand dramatically so I can work in my safe haven.
That's about it for now and I will update on my progress right here at Nasile-mak. Sorry for the hiatus and Han Ren is back.
Back to cramming for midterms.
Fuck midterms.
